Michael Lucas and the Resurgence of Bareback Studios

Bareback, also known as raw fucking, is one of the most intimate acts two people can engage in. There’s no proof of where the term originated from but it first made its appearance in popular culture during the 60s and 70s when troops in Vietnam would “ride bareback” as a slang for fucking without condoms. The assumption is that it’s orientation comes from riding horses without a saddle; it’s dangerous but it gets your heart pumping so why not, right? These days, when you’re talking about “going in” or “riding bareback” most people associate the terms with gay sex, and in particular, gay porn. And there are quite a few studios that cater specifically to bareback fucking.

Personally, I’ve been a fan of gay porn going back to 1992 (yes, that was when I turned 18. I , of course, never watched porn before that … #dodginglighteningbolts) and bareback has always fascinated me. It’s raw and it’s intimate … it’s the ultimate act of love and trust between two people who love each other. In porn, it’s the kind of adrenaline pumping act that excites even the most prudish of people. You can’t help but get turned on watching two men with beautiful bodies fucking each other raw; not to mention the cumshot afterward is … yeah … hang on … I need a cigarette.

Prior to the AIDS epidemic of the 80s, bareback was considered the “norm”. It wasn’t that big a deal to fuck raw but, sadly, that enabled the spread of the disease and cost thousands of people their lives. That’s when we started seeing condoms in porn and studios started insisting on their talent being tested. For many people this was a game-changer. The world was a different place and with fear came retaliation and uncertainty. Something had to be done to find a balance between sexy and safety.

The Forefront of the Bareback Resurgence

In 1997, Michael Lucas arrived in New York and founded Lucas Entertainment a year later. It wasn’t obvious at first but Michael was going to change the entire adult entertainment industry. By establishing himself in New York instead of Los Angeles, he had already separated himself from the “status quo” and had the freedom to create the type of setting where performers would feel comfortable. He also pushed for quality production over just cranking out another scene. This got him quite a bit of crossover fame, which gave him a voice and a platform; something he has successfully and responsibly used to fight for causes and charities that he believes in, including the State of Israel, LGBTQ rights, and sexual health. As stated in The Advocate on 10 May 2010, “Michael Lucas has used the stardom porn gave him as a platform to speak out against drugs, unsafe sex, child exploitation, anti-Semitism, religious oppression of gays, and a host of other social problems.”

Just three years later, Michael became the first public figure (in any industry) to promote something he’d been researching; Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis or PrEP. In 2013 he wrote an op-ed piece for Out.com, and he stated:

“The more I learn about PrEP, the more shocked I’m becoming that gay men are not shouting from the rooftops about this potential game changer in the fight to prevent new HIV infections, which we’re losing badly. I’m ready to shout about it. Here’s what helped convince me: Dr. Robert Grant of UCSF, the researcher who led the multinational study on PrEP, was quoted at an AIDS conference as saying that ‘No one in iPrEx [the PrEP study] acquired HIV infection with a drug level that would have been expected with daily dosing.’ Was this really possible? Whether they used condoms or not, people who took Truvada, as prescribed, were protected from the virus?”

PrEP enabled LucasEntertainment.com to be at the forefront of providing quality videos that showcased bareback fucking. Up against other bareback studios that were releasing scenes, Michael Lucas seemed to almost know the way to overcome competition is to just make more engaging films. And they did. In June of 2013, Lucas Entertainment filmed it’s first bareback scene with Billy Santoro and his now-husband, Seth Treston. It’s success cemented Lucas Entertainment as a leader in the industry and Michael himself as a pioneer of safe bareback scenes. It would be incorrect to say Lucas Entertainment is the Hollywood of the gay adult industry because other studios produce amazing films and scenes; but Michael Lucas was doing it first. And he continues to do it better than anyone else.

Bareback Premiere

My panties, even the ones I wasn’t wearing at the time, all spontaneously imploded when it was announced that Nick Capra and Michael Lucas have decided to work together again. They had worked together previously, beginning in 2008 and through Nick’s retirement in 2010. Fifteen years in the industry and the one thing Nick has never done is bareback on film for any studio … until now, that is. It was announced that Nick is going to go full bareback with one of Lucas Entertainment’s exclusive models. (You hear that sound? That’s the sound of every model working with Lucas Entertainment getting their hopes up that they would star in a scene with someone as legendary as Nick Capra … or it might be my panties spontaneously combusting … I’m not sure which) There was even a poll on Twitter for which star would be best suited for Nick to partner with.

Of course, the poll is still open and you can still vote for your favourite until 10 August, 2017. Personally, I knew right away exactly who I wanted to see Nick performing with – Dylan James. For me, Nick sets the standard for what I call the Dom Daddy behaviour. Make no mistake, he’s a versatile performer but to look at him, you see 6’2″ of tan, well muscled, furry chested sexiness and his personality is always friendly and open but when he’s on film, he’s larger, better, sexier … because he’s doing what he loves. And judging from his OnlyFans account, he really really loves bareback; he’s had strangers, friends, and a few guest appearances from other performers in the industry … and they are all fucking raw. (Someday, I hope to see Armond Rizzo laying flat on his back with his hair completely and utterly destroyed. Nick promised!)

OTP in Porn Fandom

A quick glance at any social media account will show you that those of us who are fans of the industry have our favourites. We have our favourite performers and we have our favourite scenes; hell, most of us have our favourite studios! In fandom, people have OTP or, “One True Pairing”. It’s when your two favourite performers, actors, characters, and assorted what have yous finally hook up. Think Steve McGarrett and Danny Williams on Hawaii 5.0 (the new one). You have characteristics you love about each of them.

Dylan James
  1. I’m a total sucker for tattoos (I mean come ON! He has Jack Skellington on his neck for fuck’s sake!)
  2. I’m a total sucker for a man with a cock like that (yes, some lesbians like cock … I just don’t want to fuck them)
  3. That body … those muscles … that chest … unf.
  4. His performances are always more like I’m watching someone I know vs a porn. He brings a warmth to every scene that you can tell he’s really enjoying himself.
  5. Did I mention his chest? Oh .. okay … (lights another cigarette)

  3. Professional and warm, he almost welcomes you into the scene with the way he performs
  4. Everyone needs to see Capra Booty
  5. The way he kisses makes me weak
Nick and Dylan
  1. It’s my OTP. Watching two powerful and beautiful men together on screen always pushes my buttons but when you add in the first bareback scene Nick has EVER done on film? I’m done. I want to see it now and it should already be filmed.
  2. I’ve never seen them together but their personalities and their interactions with other performers as well as their fans leads me to believe they would have amazing chemistry.
  3. I’m greedy and I think quite a few fans would agree with me that if you have one of the best in the business coming to do a first time bareback session, you want to see him with someone who is comfortable with it and can really enjoy it. For me, I believe that person is Dylan James.

Michael Lucas has a potential explosively hot pairing between the two and he’s just the studio to ensure it’s done right. I can’t wait to see what cums of it (yeah yeah … I’m so punny)
