Summer Solstice Reflections

Earlier today, I caught a Facebook live stream for my friend Doug and he was expressing his gratefulness for his blessings and his ritual for the solstice. This reminded me, “Oh shit, it’s already here?” So, first part of reflecting is realizing it’s time to reflect.

Summer Solstice

Today is Alban Hefin in Druidic culture. We are entering the time of the Holly King, when the strength of the Sun wanes and it is a time of reflection.  Reflect on what you want and who you are. Take a moment to examine what you choose to surround yourself with and what you wish to let go of. It’s a good time to let go of old grudges, make changes in your life that have been holding you back, or to simply acknowledge your accomplishments and weaknesses.

From now until Alban Arthan, or the Winter Solstice, we will lose a little more of the sun every day as we close into a time of re-birth. It was considered traditional to leave behind scraps of things that represented what was holding us back and to then burn those scraps in a bonfire. This represented a throwing away of things we do not want.

My Solstice Intention

  1. This year, I will let go of my fears. I fear being judged, I fear being hurt, and I allow that to hinder me. I hide behind who people think I am and allow that to dictate the direction of my life. But it’s not really my life if I’m not the one living it.
  2. This year, I will let go of my doubts. I’m a damn fine writer with creativity and a story to tell. I can write another book and publish it and be successful. I will achieve my dream of being able to let go of my phone work and concentrate solely on being a writer.
  3. This year … this year, I will face up to my demons. I accept that what happened to me did so without my consent and I refuse to carry the blame of it. I will seek the help I need to heal the open wound that is my childhood abuse.

Your Summer Solstice Intentions

What will you let go of? What will you embrace about yourself? In the absence of a bonfire, you can choose to write down the things you wish to be rid of on a piece of paper and burn them in a fireplace or a fire-safe bowl. Or you can go the route of my friend and carve the words into the wax of the candle and allow it to burn completely away overnight.

However you celebrate, however you practice …

Deep peace of the running wave to you.
Deep peace of the flowing air to you.
Deep peace of the quiet earth to you.
Deep peace of the shining stars to you.
